Early morning guided tours will give visitors access to a major Ancient Rome exhibition in Melbourne ahead of regular opening hours, with sessions running from 4 April to 25 October.
The exhibition, ROME: Empire, Power, People, brings together more than 180 objects from the Imperial period, spanning the 1st to the 3rd century CE. Organisers say many of the artefacts will be shown in Melbourne for the first time, including statues, mosaics, frescoes, jewellery and everyday items.
A marble bust of the Roman goddess Athena, dated to the 2nd to 3rd century CE and sourced from the Museo Nazionale Romano, is among the pieces on display.
Visitors are invited to “join a daily guided tour to beat the crowds and deepen your experience of ROME: Empire, Power, People,” with the exhibition tracing a chronological account of life in Ancient Rome. The display moves from the fall of Julius Caesar through the rise of imperial power, and into the daily rhythms of marketplaces, rituals and belief systems.
“Get up close to the original statues, mosaics, frescoes, jewellery and everyday objects from the humblest to the most sumptuous, in this Melbourne-exclusive exhibition,” organisers said. “Feel the majesty and wonder of objects displayed in a chronological retelling of life in Ancient Rome.”
Curators have focused on political, social and spiritual life across the empire, with scenography and multimedia used to present what organisers describe as “the splendour, drama and humanity of Rome.”
“Explore Ancient Rome’s political, social and spiritual worlds with over 180 objects dating from the Imperial period 1st Century CE to the 3rd Century CE,” organisers said, adding that the exhibition offers “a vivid portrait of a civilisation that continues to shape our world today.”
Tours depart daily between 8:45am and 9:30am, before the exhibition opens to the public. Participants are guided through the display by a museum tour guide and can remain in the gallery afterwards to explore independently.
Tickets are priced at $50 for adults, $42 for seniors and concession holders, and $27 for children. Member prices are $40 for adults and $22 for children.
