Construction has started on a new fulfilment centre in South East Queensland after planning approval was granted in a record timeframe. The facility, backed by Amazon and state development agencies, is set to cover more than 140,000 square metres at Greater Flagstone and extend the company’s logistics footprint in the region.
The $750 million investment aims to take advantage of the location’s transport links with major routes, the Port of Brisbane and Brisbane Airport. Construction work is expected to support around 2,000 jobs while, once operational, the centre could provide about 1,000 positions. The facility will be equipped with advanced robotics alongside human staff and is designed to operate around the clock.
Queensland’s government has promoted the project as evidence of its focus on stimulating business activity in the state, pointing to what it describes as swift approval processes and partnerships with local councils and developers. Officials have said the centre should benefit local enterprises that sell through Amazon’s platform by improving access to customers nationally.
From the company’s perspective, the investment reflects confidence in the local market and customer base. Amazon Australia’s Director of Operations has said that technology will work alongside local talent to meet delivery demands and that community engagement with schools and small businesses around the centre is planned.
Despite assurances around job creation and economic opportunity, some commentators and worker advocates have highlighted broader concerns connected with large fulfilment hubs. Past reporting and union statements have pointed to challenges in labour conditions at Amazon’s warehouses — including a reliance on casual labour and pressure on workers to meet demanding targets — though conditions vary across sites and over time.
Amazon’s network in Australia already includes several fulfilment and logistics sites, including an existing warehouse in Lytton near Brisbane that supports Queensland deliveries. The new facility at Greater Flagstone sits within a priority development area that is planned to host tens of thousands of new homes in coming years, underscoring its role in broader regional growth plans.
As construction progresses, local communities and stakeholders will be watching how the project balances technological innovation, employment practices and the everyday realities of operating a major logistics hub in one of Australia’s fastest‑growing corridors.
