Liverpool City Council has announced that a By-Election to fill the vacant South Ward seat will take place on Saturday 18 April, alongside local government polls in other parts of New South Wales. The vote follows the departure of a councillor and is aimed at maintaining full representation for the community.
Council chief executive Jason Breton said the By-Election plays an important role in ensuring residents continue to have a voice in decision making. He noted that local councils make choices affecting everyday life, from planning and infrastructure to community services and public spaces, and stressed the value of having all wards represented when those decisions are made.
“Ensuring South Ward residents have dedicated representation allows their concerns to be heard when policies are developed and resources are allocated,” Mr Breton said. “Every vote contributes to shaping how our city grows and meets the needs of its people.”
Residents enrolled in South Ward are required to vote, in line with New South Wales electoral laws that make voting compulsory for local government elections. People who are unsure about their enrolment status or where their ward boundaries lie are able to check their details via the NSW Electoral Commission’s online tools. Failure to vote may result in a penalty under state electoral regulations.
The NSW Electoral Commission is responsible for managing the election process, including enrolment, arranging polling places, counting votes and declaring results. Voters can access information on polling locations, early voting and postal votes through the Commission’s website.
Mr Breton encouraged all eligible South Ward residents to review their enrolment details and participate in the By-Election, highlighting that a strong turnout helps ensure that council decisions reflect the community’s priorities. He also emphasised that the By-Election provides an opportunity for local residents to have a say on issues affecting their neighbourhoods, such as transport, public spaces and community programs.
Community groups and local organisations are being reminded to help inform residents about the upcoming election and the importance of participation. The council noted that engagement in local government is essential for a well-functioning democracy, with elected representatives directly accountable to the communities they serve.
Liverpool City Council said further updates and resources will be made available in the lead-up to the vote to support transparency and voter participation. Eligible residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with candidates and policies to make informed choices when casting their ballots.
