I
ndia’s Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi has concluded a four-day official visit to Australia, with both sides signalling renewed energy in bilateral defence cooperation.

The 16–19 February visit centred on high-level engagements with Australia’s senior defence leadership, reinforcing what officials described as a steadily expanding Army-to-Army partnership.

Discussions focused on joint exercises, interoperability, force modernisation and professional military exchanges — areas increasingly viewed as essential as both countries navigate a more complex Indo-Pacific security environment.

During his visit to Sydney and Canberra, General Dwivedi met senior Australian commanders including Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, Chief of Army, as well as leadership from the 2nd Division and Forces Command. Engagements also extended to specialist formations, reflecting growing interest in capability sharing and operational alignment.

While no formal agreements were announced, defence officials framed the visit as strategically substantive. Conversations reportedly examined how the two armies can improve coordination in multinational exercises, streamline training exchanges and enhance doctrinal compatibility.

India and Australia have expanded defence ties steadily over the past decade, moving from symbolic engagement to structured cooperation that now includes regular joint exercises, information sharing and leadership dialogues. Both nations are members of the Quad partnership alongside the United States and Japan, and have repeatedly emphasised the importance of maintaining a stable and open Indo-Pacific.

Officials described the latest visit as part of a broader pattern of reciprocal exchanges aimed at ensuring political alignment is matched by operational familiarity between armed forces.

As regional security dynamics continue to evolve, both Canberra and New Delhi appear intent on sustaining practical cooperation grounded in professional trust, interoperability and shared strategic interests.
