Parents in parts of Victoria can now access their child’s birth certificate on their phone, as the Victorian Government begins a trial of new digital birth certificates across three local government areas.
The pilot is being rolled out in Wyndham City Council, the City of Casey and Mitchell Shire Council, with Minister for Government Services Danny Pearson announcing the move during a visit to an early learning centre in Point Cook this week.
For participating families, the digital birth certificate offers an alternative to the traditional paper document. Parents can securely add their child’s certificate to the wallet feature within the Service Victoria app, making everyday tasks such as enrolling children in kindergarten quicker and simpler.
“The digital birth certificate will make it quicker and easier for Victorian parents to enroll their kids into kinder,” Mr Pearson said.
He said the shift would help parents manage essential documents without the risk of misplacing physical copies. “This means you will have access to this important document anytime, wherever you are—which is one less thing to worry about,” he said.

The government has stressed that the digital option is voluntary. Physical birth certificates will continue to be issued to all Victorians, ensuring families can choose the format that suits them.
According to the government, the trial forms part of a broader push to expand digital access to public services. The Service Victoria digital wallet already includes items such as the veterans card, seniors card and digital driver’s licence, alongside access to more than 170 government services online and through the app.
“This is all part of our digitisation agenda—updating how government works so that Victorians can use services more easily and more efficiently,” Mr Pearson said.
Member for Point Cook Mathew Hilakari said the trial would be particularly useful for local families navigating early childhood enrolments. “I encourage families in Point Cook and Wyndham to get involved in this trial which is making it easier for parents to enroll kids into kinder and to safely keep birth certificates,” he said.
The trial is now live, meaning eligible parents in the three participating council areas can log in to the Service Victoria app and add their child’s digital birth certificate immediately.
