Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has marked India’s 77th Republic Day by sharing a message ahead of the celebrations, highlighting shared democratic values and the strength of ties between Australia and India.
In his Republic Day message, the Prime Minister said, “On India’s 77th Republic Day, I send my very best wishes to all who are celebrating India’s rich history, diversity and extraordinary breadth of achievements.”
Reflecting on the founding moment of the Indian republic, he described the adoption of the Constitution as “a defining moment, fulfilling the ambitions of a proudly sovereign nation,” and noted that India today “has embraced its place in the world, standing tall as a nation of innovation, resilience and vitality.”
The message drew a clear link between the principles enshrined in India’s Constitution and Australia’s relationship with India. “The enduring values of justice, equality, and liberty evoked 76 years ago are values that are at the heart of the bond between India and its many friends across the world—including, of course, Australia,” he said.
The Prime Minister also pointed to the breadth of cooperation between the two countries, saying, “On this special day, we also celebrate our deep and cherished strategic, economic and people-to-people connections between our two nations, and the opportunities that are within our reach.”
Paying tribute to the Indian diaspora in Australia, he added, “I pay tribute to the many Australians of Indian heritage. Your hard work, energy aspiration and love of country add so much to this nation, and to the close and warm friendship Australia enjoys with India.”
He concluded his message by joining celebrations across borders and communities, saying, “It is with great delight that I join with the people of India—and everyone who has roots in that truly extraordinary country—as you celebrate this milestone. Happy Republic Day.”
