The New South Wales Government has condemned a flyer circulating in the community containing hate speech and language some officials say appears to incite violence around Australia Day. The material, which targets specific ethnic, religious and political groups, has drawn swift rebuke from state leaders who call the conduct unacceptable.
Steve Kamper, Minister for Multiculturalism, said the state government is aware of the flyer and that the conduct it displays is abhorrent. He urged the community to reject hatred and intimidation, saying there is no place for such conduct in NSW.
The NSW Police Force confirmed it is investigating the matter. “I hope they find the person responsible quickly and bring them to justice,” Mr Kamper said, signalling the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case.
The controversy comes as communities across Australia observe the Australia Day long weekend, a period that has in recent years sparked debate about how the nation recognises its history and identity. At an event on the eve of the weekend, the Premier spoke about the values that he says are central to Australian life, including democracy, freedom, respect and equality.
Mr Kamper echoed this sentiment, urging people to celebrate what unites the community and to show respect and kindness to one another, regardless of faith, ethnicity or background. “We will not allow hatred or violence to divide us,” he said. “Across all cultures and faiths, we stand united. We are stronger together.”
Community response to the flyer has varied. Some residents expressed concern about the spread of inflammatory material at a time when conversations about national identity and inclusion are already prominent. Others have stressed the importance of robust debate, particularly around how Australia acknowledges its history, and the need to balance free speech with social responsibility.
Experts in social cohesion and law have noted that hate speech laws in Australia vary by state and territory, and enforcement can depend on context, intent and impact. Legal analysts say the police investigation will likely focus on whether the content of the flyer breaches state laws against vilification or inciting violence.
The NSW Police Force has urged anyone who comes across the flyer to report it and has appealed for information that could assist the investigation. Police have not yet confirmed any arrests.
As Australia Day events unfold across the state and nation, officials and community leaders are encouraging residents to focus on activities that promote unity and mutual respect.
