Melbourne will host a major international football event in March, with the Socceroos’ final home appearance before the FIFA World Cup 2026 set to draw thousands of fans and add fresh momentum to Victoria’s visitor economy.

The city has secured the FIFA Series, a double-header at AAMI Park on 31 March that brings four nations together in one night of international football. China will face Cameroon at 5.00pm, followed by the Socceroos taking on Curacao at 8.10pm, offering local fans a rare chance to see global teams compete on home soil.

Steve Dimopoulos said the event underlined Melbourne’s appeal as a destination for high-profile sport and major events. “This is yet another blockbuster major event in the heart of Melbourne, providing an opportunity for all football fans from across Australia and the region to fill AAMI Park and send off the Socceroos in style,” he said.

The matches will be broadcast nationally, extending Victoria’s reach beyond the stadium and helping position the state’s attractions to future travellers. Dimopoulos said the local support for the national team would be central to the occasion. “Victorians are massive supporters of the Socceroos and we look forward to creating the incredible atmosphere our fans are renowned for.”

Football Australia views the series as a key step in the team’s World Cup preparations. Interim chief executive officer Heather Garriock said the tournament would serve both sporting and fan engagement goals. “The tournament represents a significant moment for Australian football, providing the CommBank Socceroos with invaluable preparation ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026™ campaign as well as attracting teams beyond the traditional confederations to Australia which is a major drawcard for football fans.”

She noted the emotional weight of the occasion for supporters. “The FIFA Series 2026™ will be the CommBank Socceroos final appearance on home soil before departing for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ and the last chance for all Australian’s cheer on the men’s national team on home soil.”

The event also fits into a crowded calendar of cultural and sporting attractions scheduled for 2026, including the Australian Open, Festival of Sails, the NGV’s Westwood | Kawakubo exhibition, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, Melbourne Fashion Festival and Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. Together, these events form part of a broader strategy to lift visitation and spending across the state.

Visit Victoria chief executive Brendan McClements said the FIFA Series would contribute to longer-term growth targets. “It is terrific to host these games in Melbourne as they provide another building block to help grow Victoria’s visitor economy to $53.4 billion by 2030,” he said.

Tickets will be available through Ticketek, with presales for FA+ members from 10am and Football Family members from 12pm AEDT on Thursday, 22 January. General public tickets go on sale from 4pm on Friday, 23 January.
