Cairns hosted a community consultation and engagement session from 12 to 14 December during an official visit by Gopal Baglay, High Commissioner of India to Australia, and Neetu Bhagotia, Consul General of India in Brisbane. The visit was organised by GOPIO Cairns Inc and brought together members of the local Indian community for discussions focused on shared priorities and future cooperation.
The High Commissioner and the Consul General met community representatives in Cairns on 13 and 14 December, with the interactive sessions described as highly productive. Conversations centred on community engagement and opportunities for deeper collaboration, with both dignitaries commending the Indian community for its contributions and its role in strengthening India–Australia ties and people-to-people connections, as noted in a post by CGI Brisbane.
Community members, leaders, professionals and volunteers participated with enthusiasm, raising key issues and exchanging ideas in an open and constructive setting. The strong turnout and candid dialogue reinforced the close relationship between the Far North Queensland community and India’s diplomatic leadership in Australia.
During their stay, the delegation visited the Gurudwara Sahib in Edmonton, where they observed the spirit of seva, unity and equality that underpins Sikh values. The visit highlighted the cultural and spiritual links that continue to shape community life and support social harmony within multicultural Australia. Appreciation was extended to the Gurudwara Management Committee for its hospitality and ongoing service.
The visit also created space to acknowledge community achievers whose service continues to support and uplift the Far North Queensland community. Organisers thanked invited guests, community leaders and volunteers for their efforts in ensuring the consultation and engagement sessions were delivered smoothly.
Taken together, the Cairns visit underscored the role of faith, culture and community engagement in fostering inclusive societies and reinforcing the growing partnership between India and Australia.
