Cairns will host a day of cricket, culture and community when the FNQ Unity Cricket Cup 2026 is held on Sunday, 25 January at Walker Road, Edmonton, from 9.00 am.

Organised by GOPIO Cairns Inc, the event will see teams representing India, Australia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan come together for a full day of matches, set against a broader program of cultural activities that reflect the diversity of Far North Queensland.

The timing of the tournament carries added meaning, coinciding with Australia Day and India’s Republic Day. Organisers say the occasion reflects shared democratic values and the everyday reality of multicultural life in the region, where communities from different backgrounds live, work and celebrate side by side.

Cricket will be at the centre of the day, but the event extends well beyond the boundary rope. Families attending can expect children’s activities, international food stalls, cultural performances and music drawn from the many communities taking part. The aim is to create an open, welcoming space where sport becomes a meeting point rather than the sole focus.

The Cup also includes a humanitarian element, with funds and awareness being raised for Sri Lanka Flood Relief. The initiative highlights how local community events can respond to global needs, using participation and attendance to support those affected by natural disasters.

Organisers say the event has been designed to bring people together across cultures and generations. “It’s about bringing people together—many cultures, one cause—and celebrating the true spirit of FNQ,” a GOPIO Cairns representative said.

Community members from all backgrounds are encouraged to attend and take part, whether as players, spectators or volunteers. Cricket supporters will see competitive matches across the day, while families and visitors can engage with food, performances and activities that reflect the region’s cultural mix.

The FNQ Unity Cricket Cup has been positioned as a reminder of how community sport can operate as a shared civic space, where enjoyment, participation and social responsibility intersect. By combining competition with cultural exchange and charitable support, organisers hope the event will leave a lasting impression beyond the final match.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution.
