Extensive security and crowd-management measures will be in place as hundreds of thousands of people prepare to welcome the new year in Melbourne’s CBD.

Up to 500,000 revellers are expected in the city on New Year’s Eve—the busiest night on Melbourne’s calendar—with celebrations to include a large-scale fireworks and laser display launched from 27 rooftops across the CBD.

Victoria Police, emergency services and local councils are coordinating a major safety operation focused on crowd control, transport security and public order, ensuring people can enjoy the festivities and return home safely.

Additional security will be deployed across the city, with seven kilometres of fencing installed to manage large crowds in key locations. Police will maintain a strong presence throughout the night, with both uniformed and plain-clothed officers conducting extra patrols targeting antisocial behaviour and violence.

Police and Protective Services Officers (PSOs) will patrol transport hubs and entertainment precincts, with designated weapon search areas declared in the Melbourne CBD, St Kilda foreshore and Geelong CBD.

Significant traffic and pedestrian changes will be in effect to support safe movement, including closures on Swanston Street and St Kilda Road, as well as Flinders Street between Market Street and Exhibition Street.

On Victorian roads, police will step up enforcement under Operation Roadwise, targeting drink- and drug-affected driving, speeding and dangerous behaviour.

Families are encouraged to attend one of four free, family-friendly Celebration Zones at Flagstaff Gardens, Treasury Gardens, Kings Domain and Docklands, featuring DJs, dance workshops, live entertainment and early fireworks from 9.30pm.

People planning to attend are urged to prepare ahead of time by checking road closures, transport changes and crowd advice at nye.melbourne.vic.gov.au.

Acting Minister for Police Enver Erdogan said, “New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year, and extensive measures are in place to help everyone celebrate safely.

“Police and PSOs will be out in force, but planning ahead and looking out for one another will help ensure it’s a safe and enjoyable night for all.”

City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece also said,  “New Year’s Eve is Melbourne’s biggest night, with world-class fireworks, laser shows and family-friendly celebrations lighting up the city.

“We want people to enjoy the festivities, but just as importantly, to plan ahead, arrive early and follow the advice of transport and emergency services.”

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
