Two suspects have been arrested after a shooting at Bondi Beach that unfolded during a Hanukkah gathering, prompting a major police response and widespread condemnation from political leaders.
Police confirmed people were taken into custody after reports of gunfire near the beach. Officers secured the area after suspects were seen firing a shotgun and a rifle towards the beachfront, with spent cartridges scattered nearby as they were restrained on the ground. Authorities have not confirmed the motive for the attack or the number of people injured, describing the situation as fluid and urging the public to stay clear while investigations continue.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the unfolding scenes were deeply confronting. “The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing,” he said. “Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected. I just have spoken to the AFP Commissioner and the NSW Premier. We are working with NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed. I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police.”
The timing of the incident, coinciding with the first night of Hanukkah, has intensified concern within Jewish communities across Australia. In a statement, the Leader of the Victorian Opposition described the attack as “tragic, heartbreaking and will shock every Australian”.
“This repugnant act of targeted violence will cause enormous distress within Australia’s Jewish and broader communities at an already vulnerable time,” the statement said. “No Australian should live in fear for being who they are or for celebrating their faith. No Australian should be subjected to acts of such extreme violence. This conduct and the hateful views that drive it are intolerable and must be stamped out.”
The statement also reflected on the symbolism of the evening. “Tonight is the first night of the Jewish holiday of Chanukah; a festival of light among darkness. Yet once again, the Jewish community is subjected to unimaginable darkness after two years of escalating antisemitism and violence.”
“The Victorian Liberals and Nationals stand in solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community and will do everything possible to support them during this most difficult of times,” it added.
Police have confirmed they are responding to reports of a shooting near Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah gathering, with people in custody. Authorities have cautioned against speculation, noting they have not verified claims regarding injuries, fatalities, or specific weapon details beyond what has been officially confirmed.
Emergency services remain on the scene, and further updates are expected as police continue to assess the incident and establish the full sequence of events.
