Nominations have opened for the 2026 Power of Her Awards, shining a spotlight on South Australians helping girls and women thrive in sport.

The awards celebrate individuals, clubs and organisations that create opportunities for women and girls to play, coach and lead. Whether it’s a volunteer who’s kept a local team running, a journalist raising the profile of women’s sport, or an organisation working behind the scenes, the recognition program aims to highlight those driving lasting change.

The announcement follows the launch of The Power of Her summer sports series, which has turned Adelaide into a hub for women’s sport. The city is hosting an impressive line-up of fixtures, from AFLW, netball, basketball, soccer, hockey and cricket clashes to major international events including the Matildas versus New Zealand, the 2026 Women’s Australian Open golf, the Adelaide International WTA 500 and the Beach Volleyball World Championships.

Categories this year include Emerging Leader, Media Champion, Partner Champion, Champion Local Club (Metropolitan and Regional), Outstanding Organisation, and Champion of Change. Nominations close on 10 December 2025, with winners announced in early 2026.

Recreation, Sport and Racing Minister Rhiannon Pearce said the awards recognise those making real progress for gender equality in sport.

“The Power of Her Awards celebrate people creating opportunities for girls and women to thrive,” Ms Pearce said. “Every nominee—whether an emerging leader, club volunteer or organisation—plays a vital role in breaking down barriers and building a more equal future.”

Past winner Andriana Petrakis, who shared the 2025 Emerging Leader Award, said the recognition inspired her to continue her coaching journey.

“I was so excited to be recognised,” she said. “Through the Tennis SA Pathway Program for people with intellectual disabilities, I’ve been able to share my love of the sport with players who have autism and other disabilities. It feels amazing to be acknowledged for doing something I love, and it motivates me to keep working towards my goals every day.”

The Power of Her initiative forms part of the South Australian Government’s broader push to improve access and visibility for women in sport, from grassroots clubs to professional competition.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
