Cairns came alive with light and colour as more than 3,500 residents and visitors gathered at Fogarty Park for the Cairns Diwali Mela 2025, a celebration that brought together families, cultures, and traditions from across Far North Queensland.
Hosted by the Cairns Hindu Samaj, the open-air event showcased the energy and warmth of the Indian community through music, dance, and food. The park turned into a vibrant cultural hub, echoing with laughter, rhythm, and the scent of freshly cooked Indian delicacies.
The festivities began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Minister Fiona Simpson MP, Bree James MP, Mayor Amy Eden, Michael Healy MP, Terry James MP, and Matt Smith MP. Their presence reflected the spirit of unity and cultural inclusion that has become a hallmark of Cairns’ growing multicultural identity.
Performers from across Queensland and beyond entertained the crowd with traditional and contemporary Indian dances, from classical Kathak to lively Bollywood routines. The stage remained a constant draw for families and visitors, while stalls filled with colourful crafts, jewellery, and clothes offered a slice of India to those wandering the grounds.
For many, the food was an event highlight. Visitors queued for spicy chaats, biryanis, and sweets, enjoying the full spectrum of Indian flavours under the tropical evening sky.
As dusk fell, a spectacular fireworks display lit up the night, symbolising the heart of Diwali—the triumph of light over darkness. The sight drew gasps and cheers, bringing the day to a glowing close.
Beyond the festivities, the Mela carried a purpose: to raise funds for the Hindu Temple and Cultural Precinct in Cairns. The precinct, currently in development, will serve as a spiritual and cultural hub for the region, offering a place of worship and learning for generations to come.
This year’s Diwali Mela reaffirmed what Cairns has long known—its community spirit shines brightest when people come together in celebration, connection, and shared joy.
