The Speaker’s Garden at NSW Parliament House glowed with lamps and colour on 15 October as the Indian Advocacy Forum (IAF) hosted a Diwali celebration attended by Premier Chris Minns, Opposition Leader Mark Speakman and several MPs.
The event, described by the IAF as a moment of unity and togetherness, brought together parliamentarians, community leaders and guests to celebrate one of the most cherished occasions on the Hindu calendar.
Traditional performances, live Indian music and the lighting of diyas created a festive atmosphere, while guests enjoyed cultural activities and dinner under Sydney’s spring sky.
“The event beautifully brought together an array of community members and esteemed parliamentarians, reinforcing the spirit of unity and togetherness,” the Indian Advocacy Forum said in a statement. “Diwali, a festival embraced by Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain communities, is a powerful symbol of hope and light, celebrated by all Australians.”
The group acknowledged the presence and goodwill of both Premier Minns and Opposition Leader Speakman, noting their warm wishes to the Indian community and their recognition of the diaspora’s contributions to NSW’s economy and cultural life. “Their appreciation for the community’s impact in various fields, from entrepreneurship to philanthropy, reinforces the integral role of diversity in shaping a vibrant Australia,” the IAF said.
The organisation also expressed gratitude to Parliament for hosting the celebration and to MP Warren Kirby for his “unwavering support and guidance.”
This year’s celebration was one of several Diwali gatherings across the state, leading up to the festival’s peak on 20 October. It followed growing recognition of the occasion in NSW, including a motion passed in Parliament to formally acknowledge Diwali and its importance to multicultural Australia.
Across Sydney, public landmarks joined the festivities. The Opera House sails were illuminated in gold on 20 October for the state’s annual Diwali event, attended by more than 200 guests, while community groups across the country organised “Sewa Diwali” food drives and cultural programs celebrating the festival’s spirit of giving and renewal.
