Nominations are open for the 2026 City of Parramatta Citizen of the Year Awards, offering residents a chance to recognise those who make the community stronger through their commitment, creativity and compassion.

The annual awards celebrate individuals and groups who go above and beyond, from volunteers and leaders to environmental advocates and everyday helpers whose quiet efforts make a lasting difference.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said he is eager to hear about the people whose service brings the city together.

“Every year, I’m blown away by the generosity, passion and heart of our local residents,” said Cr Zaiter.

“The Citizen of the Year Awards are all about recognising the everyday legends who make Parramatta such a vibrant and caring place to live. If someone inspires you—nominate them.

“These awards are a chance to thank the people who bring out the best in us and give them the recognition they deserve.”

Among those previously recognised is 2025 Citizen of the Year recipient Bhumika Mayur Mhatre, who described the honour as one of the most humbling and uplifting experiences of her life.

“This honour is not simply about me—it shines a light on the extraordinary spirit of service that exists within our community,” Ms Mhatre said.

“The truth is, people volunteer because it is their calling—their heart song—and it comes from a place of deep soul-level satisfaction, yet it is the universe that reciprocates in its own way.

“As nominations open for the 2026 Citizen of the Year Award, I encourage everyone to reflect on those individuals whose tireless efforts often go unnoticed but whose impact is immeasurable, and I wish the very best of luck to the 2026 nominees and future recipients—may your light continue to inspire us all.”

The awards include four honours across two categories: Young Citizen of the Year (16–30 years), Citizen of the Year (31–64 years), Senior Citizen of the Year (65+ years), and the Community Group Award.

Anyone can nominate, but nominees must live, work or contribute meaningfully to the Parramatta area. Two local residents will also have the opportunity to join the official judging panel, helping to decide who takes home the awards.

Nominations close at 5pm on Friday 14 November, and expressions of interest for judging panel positions close at 5pm on Monday 27 October. The winners will be announced as part of Council’s Australia Day program.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
