The strength and spirit of North Queensland will be on full display when the Townsville Titans represent Australia at the Auckland Malayali Samajam International Tug of War Tournament 2025 in New Zealand. Scheduled for Saturday, 4 October at the Manukau Tennis Centre, the event will feature teams from around the world in a test of power, strategy, and endurance.
The Titans enter the competition carrying a proud legacy—crowned All-Australian Champions, with multiple podium-finishes at national and Oceania events and recognised as Best Emerging Team in 2023. For the Titans, tug of war is about more than muscle. “We’re not just athletes, we’re a family. Every pull of the rope is powered by trust, grit, and the belief that we’re building something bigger than ourselves,” said team captain Antony Jacob, who was earlier recognised as one of Australia’s top anchors in the sport.

Community support is already rallying behind the Titans. Phillip Thompson, Member for Herbert, praised the team on social media, writing: “LOCAL LEGENDS: Our city is home to the Townsville Titans, a powerhouse group of men competing in tug-of-war on the international stage. Later in the year the Titans head to New Zealand to compete. Let’s get behind our team!”
The team is currently focused on raising funds to travel across the Tasman and is inviting sponsors and well-wishers to support their journey. Following their campaign in New Zealand, the Titans will also compete at the All-Oceania International Tug of War Championships in Melbourne this November.
Jacob added, “We’re proud to represent Townsville and Australia. Every competition is a chance to showcase what determination and teamwork can achieve.”
The Indian Sun congratulates the Titans and looks forward to seeing them fly the flag high on the international stage.
