The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) has launched the India–Australia Facilitation Centre during its 4th International Conference in Sydney, marking a step towards deeper trade and investment ties between the two countries.
The three-day conference, held from 3 to 5 September, ran on the theme Embracing Innovation, Enhancing Good Governance. It drew company secretaries, governance experts, and industry leaders from both nations. The closing day included a study tour at the University of Wollongong, designed to broaden understanding of global governance education and create space for new international collaborations.
Addressing the gathering, Dr S. Janakiraman, Consul General of India in Sydney, commended ICSI’s work over five decades. “Company Secretaries have evolved into a strategic advisor to boards today, shaping decision-making, culture, and purpose across organizations, and guiding them through complexity,” he said. He also encouraged professionals to use the Consulate’s Business Centre as a one-stop concierge for office space, meetings, and business promotion in Australia.
The launch of the Facilitation Centre is aimed at helping companies in both India and Australia establish offices and subsidiaries across the two markets, while encouraging smoother commercial exchange.
A special session focused on India’s first International Financial Services Centre at GIFT City, led by Shri K. Rajaraman, Chairperson of the International Financial Services Centres Authority. He highlighted GIFT City’s role in spurring innovation, fintech growth, and cross-border trade, urging businesses to take advantage of its infrastructure for sustainable expansion.
Over the course of the conference, speakers tackled issues including board readiness, ESG and the circular economy, data privacy, cyber security, risk oversight, governance and investment ties, diversity and inclusion, and the role of generative AI in corporate accountability.
CS Dhananjay Shukla, President of ICSI, said the conference was intended to highlight growing economic and governance links between the two countries. “The 4th International Conference will serve as a pivotal platform for Company Secretaries, helping them explore Australia’s legal and governance frameworks, ethical perspectives and emerging career opportunities, amidst the expanding economic engagement,” he said.
Hosted by ICSI Overseas Centre Australia Inc. and supported by the Australia India Chamber of Commerce and the Services Export Promotion Council of India, the event brought together professionals, investors, and policymakers to discuss the future of governance and trade between India and Australia.
