Victorians facing rising living costs will be able to apply for a new $100 Power Saving Bonus, with the Allan Labor Government opening applications today for eligible concession card households.

Premier Jacinta Allan said the scheme was designed to provide direct help for families struggling with bills. “So many families are doing it tough and we’re on their side by delivering real help, right now,” she said.

The payment is available to households holding a health care card, pensioner concession card, veterans’ affairs pensioner concession card, or veterans’ affairs gold card. Applications can be made through the Victorian Energy Compare website, while more than 230 Neighbourhood Houses across the state will provide in-person assistance for those without internet access or needing extra support.

Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the new payment was aimed at easing winter costs. “This $100 payment will help vulnerable Victorians manage their winter energy bills,” she said. “Any Victorian can visit the Victorian Energy Compare website to check if they can switch to a cheaper energy offer.”

The Power Saving Bonus is in addition to the Commonwealth’s $150 Energy Bill Relief Fund, which will be automatically applied to all households.

The program builds on earlier rounds of support. Since the initiative began in 2018, more than 4.5 million applications have been paid across four rounds, delivering over $1 billion in relief to households.

Member for Essendon Danny Pearson said the government was making sure the bonus was easy to access. “We’re making it easier for Victorians to access the Power Saving Bonus with over 230 locations like neighbourhood houses where you can drop in and get help to apply,” he said.

Alongside the bonus, Victorians experiencing financial difficulty can use the Energy Assistance Program, a free support service delivered by Anglicare Victoria and cohealth, which offers over-the-phone and in-person help for those struggling to pay their energy bills.

Households are also encouraged to compare energy offers online. Last year, users of the Energy Compare website typically saved $240 a year by switching providers.

For details or to apply, visit compare.energy.vic.gov.au or call 1800 000 832. The Energy Assistance Program is available on 1800 161 215.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.
