Amazon Australia has boosted its footprint in Victoria with two new purpose-built sites in Melbourne’s northwest and southeast, delivering 700 jobs and signalling growing confidence in the state’s logistics and supply chain sector.

Minister for Economic Growth and Jobs Danny Pearson joined Amazon executives in Cranbourne West to open the company’s $200 million fulfilment centre, which will employ more than 500 people. The site has the capacity to store up to four million products, enabling small and medium-sized businesses to use Amazon’s delivery platform to reach more customers and offer faster delivery times.

Roles at the new facility range from entry-level positions with on-the-job training to skilled jobs in operations, human resources, engineering and workplace health and safety. Earlier this month, Amazon opened a logistics facility in Ravenhall, creating another 200 jobs and providing opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

Attracting such investments is part of the Allan Labor Government’s strategy to grow local economies. The announcement follows the recent opening of Mondelēz International’s $130 million National Distribution Centre in Truganina, which created more than 200 jobs.

Mr Pearson said, “Amazon’s investment is a vote of confidence in our workforce and small business – and it sends a clear message that Victoria’s economy is going from strength to strength.”

Member for Cranbourne Pauline Richards called the news “fantastic” for the local community, saying it would help businesses sell their products more widely.

Janet Menzies, Amazon Australia’s Country Manager, said Melbourne had been home to the company’s first Australian fulfilment centre in 2017. “We’re proud to be creating hundreds of high-quality local job opportunities, offering on-the-job training and exciting career opportunities, in a safe and positive environment,” she said.

She added that the new Cranbourne West site would “create additional opportunities for local businesses to expand their reach, not just in Victoria but across the entire country” through Amazon’s enhanced logistics network.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Stefan Koomen welcomed the investment, saying it reinforced the city’s strengths as a destination for business and innovation and would lead to more job creation as the region grows.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
