Veteran actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan will attend the 2025 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) as the event’s official Chief Guest, organisers have confirmed.

Now in its 16th year, the festival will honour Khan’s four-decade-long career with a specially curated retrospective, culminating in a showcase of his latest film, Sitaare Zameen Par. The retrospective will feature some of his most influential works, including Taare Zameen Par, Dangal, Lagaan, PK, and Secret Superstar—films widely recognised for their social relevance and storytelling depth.

Khan’s new release, Sitaare Zameen Par, continues this tradition. The film follows a basketball coach who, as part of a community service sentence, is assigned to train a team of neurodivergent adults. The story has resonated strongly with audiences and critics alike for its empathy-driven narrative and focus on inclusion.

The festival’s spotlight event will include a screening of Sitaare Zameen Par, followed by a live discussion featuring Khan, director RS Prasanna, and Aparna Purohit, CEO of Aamir Khan Films. The session will offer audiences insight into the creative journey behind the film.

Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said Khan’s involvement is a significant moment for the festival. “Aamir Khan is not just a cinematic legend—his body of work reflects deep sensitivity, artistic bravery, and a commitment to storytelling with purpose. His latest film is a beautiful example of inclusive storytelling filled with empathy and honesty,” she said.

Khan said he was looking forward to engaging with audiences in Melbourne.

“It’s a festival that truly celebrates the spirit of Indian cinema in all its diversity and richness. With Sitaare Zameen Par, we’ve tried to tell a story that embraces neurodivergence with sensitivity and heart. I’m grateful the film has resonated with so many and look forward to sharing it with Melbourne,” he said.

Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan MP, welcomed the announcement and said the festival is a key event on the state’s cultural calendar.

“Victoria is proud to welcome one of India’s most loved and respected actors. Aamir Khan is not only an icon for millions but a strong voice for the values of equality and inclusivity that we treasure here in Victoria,” the Premier said.

Minister for Creative Industries Colin Brooks said, “The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne continues to attract global talent and present a rich program of screenings and special events. We are proud to support a festival that celebrates screen excellence and community.”

The 2025 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will run from 14 to 24 August and feature a dynamic program of films, masterclasses, panels and cultural events. Aamir Khan’s retrospective is expected to be one of the key highlights of this year’s event.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
