Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (1630–1680) is a legendary Indian warrior-king and the founder of the Maratha Empire. Renowned for his military acumen, administrative reforms, and guerrilla warfare tactics, Shivaji established a strong and progressive kingdom rooted in regional identity and self-rule (Swarajya).

He challenged the Mughal Empire and other regional powers, building a competent navy and fortifying his rule with over 300 forts across Maharashtra. The Maratha Empire, at its peak, covered nearly one-third area of the Indian subcontinent and resisted the Mughal and British dominance.

Shivaji remains a symbol of valor, leadership, and pride for millions of Indians. Many tomes have been written about him.

“Janata Raja” is a grand historical play based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, written by Babasaheb Purandare, a renowned historian and writer specialising in Shivaji’s life and legacy. Babasaheb Purandare was honored with the Padma Vibhushan in 2019 for his contribution to literature and education, particularly for preserving and promoting the history of Shivaji Maharaj.

First staged in the 1980s, “Janata Raja” has a mega cast of over 200 actors and massive stage sets replicating forts, palaces and battlefields and features live animals such as horses and elephants.

This magnum opus play is due to arrive in Australia, for the first time, on 10th August 2025 and is brought to you by Ms. Kalyani Kulkarni in association with E3 Events. The larger-than-life production is in Hindi with English subtitles. With 60 professional artists from India and 100 local talents from Sydney joining the cast, the production promises a thrilling treat.

Kalyani Kulkarni is a Sydney-based woman entrepreneur who is the owner of Kalyani Transport Services which specialises in reliable, safe, and affordable passenger transport, from airport and cruise terminal transfers to tailored transport solutions for tours, weddings, and community events. The company has been a finalist for four consecutive years in the prestigious Campbelltown Local Business Awards, including in 2025.

Says Kalyani about the play: “Janata Raja” is more than just a theatrical performance; it is a powerful bridge to our cultural roots. Through storytelling, historical depth, and live visual spectacle, it offers children and youth an engaging way to connect with their heritage. For many Indian families, this production presents a unique opportunity to pass on the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to the next generation many of whom have grown up disconnected from the rich legacy, rekindling a sense of cultural pride and deeper understanding of our rich history.”

Immerse yourself in a magnificent theatrical journey and witness history come alive before your eyes.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
