An elected Dutton Coalition Government will provide up to $8.5 million to support the establishment of Australia’s first Hindu school, reaffirming its commitment to faith-based education and multicultural communities.

Opposition Leader the Hon Peter Dutton MP made the announcement during a visit to the BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir and Cultural Precinct, coinciding with the visit of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj.

“The Hindu community in Australia, now 684,000 strong, has made an enormous contribution to our nation’s multicultural fabric,” Dutton said.

“This announcement recognises the vision of the Hindu community to establish a dedicated faith-based school, providing an opportunity for Hindu children to learn in an environment that respects their traditions and beliefs.”

The Shadow Minister for Education, Senator the Hon Sarah Henderson, highlighted the significance of the funding, noting that it provides a much-needed boost to a community that has long advocated for such an institution.

“The Hindu community has been calling for this school, and we believe it is only fair that Hindu children have access to the same faith-based educational opportunities as other religious groups,” Senator Henderson said.

“The Coalition is committed to ensuring freedom of choice in education, and we are proud to support this initiative, which will foster academic excellence while embracing cultural heritage.”

Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Jason Wood MP, emphasised the school’s role in providing a balanced curriculum that integrates Hindu values alongside the Australian curriculum.

“Hinduism is one of the fastest-growing religions in Australia, and the demand for a Hindu school has become increasingly clear,” Wood said.

“This initiative will ensure that Hindu children have access to an education that embraces both Australian values and their cultural identity.”

The Hindu Council of Australia has worked for over a decade to bring this project to life, underscoring the importance of a dedicated Hindu school for the community.

The proposed school will follow a structure similar to independent faith-based institutions, maintaining curriculum and education standards applicable to all Australian schools while incorporating Hindu teachings, languages, and cultural education.

Dutton outlined the Coalition’s financial commitment, stating, “An initial investment of up to $850,000 will be allocated for a business case to assess feasibility, costs, location, benefits, and risks, ensuring the school’s planning and regulation processes receive the necessary support.”

“Following the successful completion of the business case, a further $7.65 million will be set aside for capital expenditure to bring this vision to life.”

“An elected Dutton Coalition Government looks forward to working with the Hindu Council of Australia to ensure this groundbreaking project is realised, providing Hindu families with greater educational choice and strengthening Australia’s multicultural landscape.”
