A theatre performance where the audience controls the story is set to take centre stage at The Lark at Gluttony—Rymill Park in Adelaide from 18 to 23 March. Julie: Her Life in Your Hands is no ordinary one-woman show; it’s an interactive theatrical experiment where no two nights are the same.
At the heart of it all is Julie, a character whose fate is dictated entirely by the audience. Every few minutes, they make decisions that steer her life in different directions—sometimes playful, sometimes dramatic, and occasionally down an unexpected and unsettling path. It’s like stepping into a live version of a choose-your-own-adventure book, except the stakes feel very real.
The performance unfolds in real time, with each audience choice shaping Julie’s journey. One night, she might find herself caught in a lighthearted love story, while on another, events might spiral into something far darker. The unpredictability makes each show a singular experience, driven by collective choices that create a shared sense of responsibility for Julie’s fate.
Bringing this vision to life is storyteller and performer Mehak Mirza Prabhu. Known for her emotionally charged narratives and seamless character transitions, Mehak has built a reputation for immersing audiences in her world. With an ability to shift between humour and heartache in an instant, she draws viewers into the performance, making them feel like active participants rather than passive observers.
The directorial reins for Julie: Her Life in Your Hands are held by Suhani Shah, making her debut in this role. Fresh from the success of her Adelaide Fringe show Spellbound, Suhani brings her experience in magic and psychological illusion to the stage, ensuring that the audience’s influence on the performance is as thrilling as it is unpredictable.
The show taps into universal themes—choice, consequence, and the chaos of everyday life. It invites audiences to not just witness a story unfold but to shape its very fabric, posing the question: if you were in Julie’s shoes, what would you do?
Expect laughter, tension, and perhaps a little discomfort as Julie’s life unfolds at the mercy of a room full of strangers. Those stepping into The Lark for this one-of-a-kind performance won’t just be spectators; they’ll be co-authors of a story that is rewritten every single night.
