Parramatta’s skyline just got a fresh perspective with the opening of the $1.4 million Dixon Park Escarpment Lookout. Perched on the cliff-top opposite Parramatta Quay, this revamped parkland is set to become a favourite for visitors keen to snap the perfect shot of the city and the river.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter sees the new lookout as a welcome addition to the city’s growing list of attractions.

“Some of the world’s most visited cities have spectacular viewing points, and now Parramatta has joined the list. Our new lookout provides sweeping views from Gasworks Bridge to Lennox Bridge, making it a must-see,” Cr Zaiter said.

The lookout is part of a broader effort to enhance the riverside precinct, complementing the Escarpment Boardwalk, Charles Street Square, and Parramatta Quay. These improvements have already earned recognition for their design and architecture.

“I look forward to seeing visitors arriving by ferry to take in the incredible views, and locals enjoying the sunrises, sunsets, and fireworks from this prime location,” Cr Zaiter added. “It’s also a stunning backdrop for wedding and engagement photos, making it a place where special memories will be created for years to come.”

Situated at Stewart Street Reserve on the northern side of the river, the lookout has been designed for both accessibility and safety. The space features a cantilevered platform, new pathways, seating, and landscaped gardens, creating a spot for relaxation, reflection, and celebration.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully acknowledged the NSW Government’s $500,000 contribution through the Places to Roam program, which helped bring this project to life.

“Parramatta is one of Sydney’s fastest-growing local government areas, and it’s essential that we continue to support open spaces like Dixon Park. This transformation means the local community now has an enhanced place to unwind and connect,” Mr Scully said.

Previously an underused reserve, the site has been given a new lease of life, benefiting over 2,100 homes within a short walk.

“This space is now a unique cultural and scenic destination, giving locals and visitors a fresh reason to explore the area,” Mr Scully added.

The project was made possible through funding from the City of Parramatta Council, the NSW Government’s Places to Roam program, and the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. With its mix of breathtaking views and thoughtful design, Dixon Park Escarpment Lookout is set to become a standout addition to Parramatta’s evolving cityscape.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
