Tasmania has started the year with record-low unemployment, with fresh figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirming a drop to 4.0 per cent in January 2025. This marks a steady three-year period where the state’s unemployment rate has stayed at or below 4.2 per cent, reflecting a sustained period of economic stability and job creation.
The latest data also shows more than 1,000 new jobs added since December 2024, bringing total employment in the state to 281,948. Finance Minister Roger Jaensch welcomed the figures, calling it another positive milestone for Tasmanians. He credited the state’s economic strategy for maintaining momentum across key sectors and reinforcing confidence among businesses.
Alongside job growth, wages in Tasmania have also seen an upward trend. With incomes reaching new highs and the state’s economy expanding to a record $40.6 billion, there is a sense of financial optimism among workers and businesses alike. Retail trade has been performing strongly, and recent reports from NAB suggest Tasmania has the third-best business conditions in the country, with confidence among businesses continuing to build.
To maintain this economic trajectory, the government is pushing ahead with a $30 billion infrastructure pipeline. Projects under this initiative are designed to drive further employment, bolster business activity and enhance community infrastructure. Investments in major works, expansion of skilled labour forces, and strategic partnerships with businesses are key pillars in ensuring long-term growth.
Jaensch pointed to the government’s ongoing commitment to backing businesses and the workforce at every turn. Whether through large-scale infrastructure projects, targeted funding for community groups or initiatives to support emerging industries, the objective remains clear: sustained job creation and a thriving economy.
The figures come at a time when global economic conditions remain uncertain, yet Tasmania’s ability to maintain low unemployment and steady wage growth suggests a degree of resilience. Businesses are not only weathering challenges but finding opportunities for expansion and investment, further strengthening the local economy.
With 2025 already off to a strong start, the focus now shifts to ensuring this positive momentum continues, with policies and projects aimed at sustaining economic confidence and supporting job seekers. Tasmania’s ability to maintain stability while fostering growth will be closely watched in the coming months, as it seeks to build on these latest achievements.
