Community in conversation: The Grampians Regional Advisory Council meets at Ballarat Town Hall to tackle racism and promote inclusivity

Ballarat Town Hall became the backdrop for an important discussion on racism this week as the Grampians Regional Advisory Council gathered to address pressing issues facing the local community. At the centre of the discussion was workplace discrimination, with Lauren Matthews from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC) presenting a new guideline, “Race Discrimination in the Workplace,” aimed at tackling racism in professional settings.

Community members and organisations took part in conversations that explored different ways to challenge racism. Discussions ranged from education programs to cultural events designed to foster inclusivity. Support networks and success stories were shared, highlighting efforts that have already made an impact.

The Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) also took the opportunity to update attendees on next year’s Cultural Diversity Week, set for 17-23 March. Residents were encouraged to get involved, whether through hosting events, sharing experiences, or attending the Victorian Multicultural Festival at Grazeland from 21-23 March. The annual event serves as a platform to showcase the state’s diverse cultural communities.

Ballarat has long been engaged in proactive efforts to push back against racism. The Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council (BRMC) has implemented programs like “No to Racism in Western Regional Victoria,” which offers Anti-Racism Active Bystander Training and creates spaces for intercultural engagement through arts, music, and interfaith initiatives.

The City of Ballarat’s Intercultural Plan 2022–2026 also sets out clear actions, including co-delivering anti-racism training, issuing strong public statements against discrimination, and collaborating with community leaders on events that promote inclusion.

The recent discussions at Ballarat Town Hall reflect a broader community effort to make inclusivity more than just an aspiration. By keeping conversations open, strengthening education, and celebrating cultural diversity, Ballarat continues to take meaningful steps towards a future where respect and equality shape everyday life. With Cultural Diversity Week on the horizon, local residents have another opportunity to play their part in shaping a community that stands united against racism.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
