India’s High Commissioner Gopal Baglay with South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, discussing new opportunities in education, trade, and tourism between India and South Australia

India’s High Commissioner to Australia, Gopal Baglay, has made an official visit to South Australia, reinforcing ties between India and the state. Governor Frances Adamson hosted a lunch at Government House, where discussions with Premier Peter Malinauskas, Minister for Trade and Investment Joe Szakacs, and Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Tourism Zoe Bettison focused on expanding educational and commercial opportunities for Indians in South Australia.

The High Commissioner was accompanied by Deputy High Commissioner Irina Thakur and Consul and Head of Chancery Niravkumar B Sutariya. Also present at the lunch were Tim White, Director of Trade at the Department of State Development, and Mark Horton, Acting Director of Protocol and Diplomatic Relations at the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

Premier Malinauskas has announced plans for a five-day visit to India in March, aiming to explore direct flights between India and Adelaide while boosting opportunities for international students. South Australia has become an attractive destination for Indian students, and strengthening connections in the education sector remains a key priority.

The High Commissioner’s visit and the Premier’s upcoming trip reflect growing collaboration between India and South Australia in education, trade, and tourism. Both sides see value in expanding commercial partnerships and deepening ties that support economic growth.

South Australia has been working to position itself as a hub for international students and businesses, with ongoing efforts to build stronger relationships with key partners like India. As discussions progress, new initiatives are expected to further integrate Indian and South Australian communities, ensuring mutual benefits for both regions.
