Professor Mimi Tang has been appointed as the inaugural Chair of the ASEAN-Australia Centre Advisory Board, marking a new phase in Australia’s engagement with Southeast Asia.
The Centre, launched in November 2024, is central to Australia’s strategy to deepen ties with ASEAN, focusing on economic, business and cultural connections. As a world-renowned immunologist allergist, Professor Tang brings a distinct mix of scientific expertise and personal ties to the region.
Born in Singapore and raised in Malaysia before moving to Australia during primary school, Professor Tang has long understood the value of cross-border collaboration. Her father’s involvement in the original Colombo Plan played a role in shaping her family’s journey to Australia, a connection that now comes full circle in her new role.
At the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Professor Tang heads the Allergy Immunology Research Group and directs the Allergy Translation Centre. She also holds a Professorial Fellowship at the University of Melbourne and is a Consultant Immunologist Allergist at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Her pioneering work in food allergy treatments has changed the landscape of paediatric allergy management.
Beyond research, Professor Tang is the CEO and Scientific Founder of Prota Therapeutics, a biotech firm developing a novel peanut allergy treatment. Her experience in bridging science with business will be an asset to the ASEAN-Australia Centre’s mission of strengthening ties through economic and research collaboration.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the appointment reinforces the Centre’s role in fostering deeper regional ties. With Professor Tang at the helm, Australia’s connection with ASEAN gains a leader who understands the region through both lived experience and professional expertise.
