The Victorian Multicultural Commission’s Eastern Metro Regional Advisory Council met in Box Hill to address racism, with a focus on workplace discrimination. Lauren Matthews, Director of Programs at the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, presented a new guideline, “Race discrimination in the workplace,” aimed at helping employers prevent and address racial discrimination.
The guideline sets out five minimum standards for compliance with the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. It provides a framework for employers to create anti-racist workplaces and meet their legal responsibilities. Attendees discussed the impact of workplace racism on culturally diverse Victorians and explored ways to hold offenders accountable while minimising harm.
Members shared personal experiences, highlighting the challenges faced by employees from diverse backgrounds. Strategies to promote intercultural understanding were also on the agenda, with discussions centring on how businesses and organisations can create inclusive environments.
The meeting also provided an update on Cultural Diversity Week, set for 17–23 March 2025. The Victorian Multicultural Commission encouraged community participation through local events, sharing cultural heritage videos, and attending the Victorian Multicultural Festival at Grazeland in Spotswood from 21–23 March.
Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Ingrid Stitt, stressed that the new guideline will help employers better understand their legal obligations and take proactive steps to address racial discrimination in the workplace. The initiative is part of a broader push to ensure that Victorian workplaces are inclusive, equitable, and free from discrimination.
