Experts and officials from Australia, India, and Indo-Pacific Island States have gathered in Suva for the Fiji Dialogue 2025, an initiative aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and resilience. The event follows the first dialogue held in Kolkata in 2023 and brings together key voices to discuss security challenges and opportunities for collaboration.

Hosted by the Australia India Institute and the University of the South Pacific, with backing from the Australian Government’s Department of Defence, the dialogue offers a space for discussions on pressing issues. With representation from both the Indian and Pacific Oceans, the event is designed to ensure that island nations have a platform to share their perspectives on security and resilience.

The agenda covers maritime cooperation, infrastructure protection, resource management, countering disinformation, and climate-related risks. These topics are particularly relevant as the region faces pressures from environmental change, geopolitical shifts, and security threats.

Recent developments highlight the growing need for coordinated efforts. In August 2024, Australia reached an agreement with Pacific Island leaders to establish a regional police response force, aimed at strengthening security ties and addressing external influences. The initiative, which includes police training and the formation of a mobile unit, is designed to tackle issues such as drug trafficking, illegal fishing, and financial crimes.

Fiji, like other Pacific nations, has been weighing its security partnerships carefully. Agreements with Australia, New Zealand, the US, and China have provided opportunities for increased cooperation but also raise concerns about maintaining sovereignty. For smaller nations in the region, balancing external support with domestic interests remains a central challenge.

The Fiji Dialogue 2025 aims to address these complexities by fostering open conversations on regional security and resilience. With participation from a range of stakeholders, the discussions are expected to help shape policies that support long-term stability across the Indo-Pacific.
