J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Rajagopal Vance, embody the spirit of diversity that shapes the United States. Their story is a blend of different cultures, backgrounds, and values, highlighting how these elements come together to influence the future of the nation. Some have called them the literal embodiment of the American Dream.
J.D. Vance, now the new Vice President of the United States, is known for his strong views on social and economic issues, often drawn from his own experiences. But his story is also deeply personal, shaped by his relationship with Usha, a skilled lawyer and businesswoman of Indian heritage. Together, they have three children, further solidifying their commitment to shaping a future rooted in family values and inclusivity.
Usha was born in San Diego to Telugu Indian immigrant parents from the West Godavari and Krishna districts of Andhra Pradesh, India. She was raised with a deep respect for her heritage and a strong sense of purpose. She attended Yale University, earning a bachelor’s degree in history, and later graduated from Yale Law School with a Juris Doctor degree. After law school, Usha worked for federal judges, including Chief Justice John Roberts and Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
In 2019, Usha joined a prominent law firm, focusing on civil litigation and appeals. Her career showcased her dedication and the resilience typical of immigrant communities striving for success in America.

However, in 2024, Usha decided to step away from her law firm job to support her husband’s growing public role. She played an important role at the 2024 Republican National Convention, introducing J.D. Vance, and traveled with him during his vice-presidential campaign, often appearing on stage in support of their shared values.
In his memoir Hillbilly Elegy, Vance shares how he met Usha at Yale and quickly fell in love with her. Usha’s influence has been significant in shaping his views on family, community, and inclusivity. Her support and guidance have shaped his political journey and perspectives on societal issues.
Together, the couple represents a blend of cultures, generations, and ideologies. Their partnership reflects the larger American ideal of different cultures coming together, enriching the nation’s strength and vibrancy.
For Usha, her journey as an immigrant and a woman of color in a competitive field inspires many. She shows how diversity brings valuable perspectives, strength, and innovation, strengthening the fabric of the nation.
As they step into their new roles, the Vances continue to demonstrate that diversity should be embraced, not feared. Their commitment to creating a more inclusive and prosperous future for all serves as a reminder that unity is strength, and diversity is key to that strength.

Support Independent Community Journalism
Dear Reader,The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.
We operate independently.
