Maribyrnong Council’s Swim Unity program is making waves as it opens registrations for its expanded 2025 offering. This 10-week swimming initiative is designed to provide multicultural women in the community with vital swimming skills and water safety knowledge, fostering confidence in and around water.
Originally launched in early 2024 in partnership with Her Run, Swim Unity has already established itself as a transformative program. With additional grant funding from the Australian Government, the initiative is now set to reach even more participants. Sessions will be held at the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, covering everything from proper swimming techniques to drowning prevention and emergency responses.
The program reflects the Council’s commitment to addressing the diverse needs of its community. It empowers women to feel safe and capable while enjoying aquatic activities, breaking down barriers to participation in a supportive environment. Two intakes are now available, starting on Tuesday, 28 January, and Sunday, 2 February, with more dates planned later in the year to accommodate demand.
Mayor Cr Pradeep Tiwari praised Swim Unity as an example of the Council’s dedication to wellbeing and inclusion.
“Swim Unity goes beyond teaching swimming skills; it provides a foundation of water safety and confidence that can truly be life-changing,” Mayor Tiwari said. “Programs like this ensure we are meeting the unique needs of all groups in our diverse community.”
The Council has also ensured the program’s schedule is flexible, with breaks planned for Ramadan, public holidays, and school holidays.
Complementing Swim Unity is the GO Family program, a six-week soccer initiative aimed at families of all abilities. This inclusive program encourages children, parents, and grandparents to get active together, strengthening both family and community ties. Supported by the Australian Sports Commission’s Play Well Participation Grant, GO Family kicks off with a launch event on 18 January, followed by sessions starting on 10 February.
Both programs highlight Maribyrnong’s proactive approach to fostering health and inclusion. Swim Unity, in particular, stands out as a beacon of empowerment, offering multicultural women the skills and confidence they need to thrive in aquatic settings.
Registrations are now open, inviting the community to dive into a year of activity, connection, and growth.
