Australia and India’s shared love for sports found a new avenue on 13 December 2024 with the Australia-India Sport Innovation Summit at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. The event, organised by the Centre for Australia-India Relations in collaboration with Trade Investment Queensland and Cricket Australia, brought sports and technology under one roof, showcasing how bilateral ties can transcend the playing field.

Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Tim Watts kicked off proceedings, highlighting the power of sports as a cultural and economic unifier. With over half of Australians engaged in sports annually, the potential for collaboration across sports science, event management, and athlete development was underscored as a promising frontier for both nations. His address celebrated the role of sports in fostering deeper ties and setting a collaborative tone for the event.

The summit explored the future of sports through two panel discussions. The first, centred on the legacy of Brisbane 2032, reflected on how the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games could transform Brisbane’s urban and social fabric. With India vying to host the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad, Brisbane’s experience offered a valuable blueprint for sustainable growth and lasting impact.

The second panel showcased advancements in sports technology, featuring Australian researchers presenting cutting-edge innovations in high-performance management. The emphasis on academic partnerships revealed how technological strides could benefit sports at every level, opening doors for Australia and India to join forces in this evolving domain.

Women’s sports took centre stage as Watts celebrated the Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL), now recognised as the world’s most valuable female-only sporting tournament. The summit reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and inspired discussions on nurturing the next generation of female athletes.

Innovative startups and sports tech were also on display, with exhibitors like Myriad Studios and GravityFit presenting transformative tools for athlete training and immersive experiences. These innovations underlined the dynamic potential of Australia-India collaboration in reimagining sports for the future.

The event highlighted existing partnerships, including Australian contributions to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and football clinics empowering girls in vulnerable communities. These initiatives serve as tangible examples of how sports can drive cultural exchange and economic growth.

The Australia-India Sport Innovation Summit has laid the foundation for new opportunities, blending tradition with technology to foster a partnership that extends beyond competition. With shared goals of innovation and inclusivity, the two nations are set to redefine the global sports narrative.
