On 20 November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia held the 2nd India-Australia Annual Summit on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. The summit marked a significant milestone in the evolving relationship between India and Australia, with both leaders emphasising the shared vision for cooperation across multiple sectors.

The leaders discussed a wide range of key areas of bilateral collaboration, including defence and security, trade and investment, education and skills development, sports, space exploration, mobility, and people-to-people ties. Both Prime Ministers reiterated their resolve to further advance the partnership, ensuring that India and Australia continue to work together to address global challenges and seize opportunities for mutual growth.

A major highlight of the summit was the announcement of the launch of the Renewable Energy Partnership (REP), an initiative that was agreed upon during the 1st India-Australia Annual Summit. The partnership aims to foster collaboration on clean energy technologies and initiatives, reflecting both nations’ commitment to sustainability and tackling climate change. The REP is expected to pave the way for joint efforts in renewable energy research, development, and the sharing of expertise to transition to greener energy solutions.

In their joint statement, both leaders emphasised the importance of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as a key pillar of their bilateral relationship, with an emphasis on tangible outcomes that benefit their citizens and contribute to regional and global stability. The focus on defence and security was highlighted as essential for ensuring a peaceful Indo-Pacific region, while trade and investment remain central to the economic cooperation between India and Australia, with both nations seeking to expand their economic ties and trade agreements.

The leaders also underscored the significance of educational collaboration, with India and Australia aiming to further enhance academic exchanges and cooperation in skills development. In sports, space, and mobility, the two nations committed to exploring new opportunities for joint ventures and innovation, encouraging greater collaboration between their scientific, academic, and business communities.

As the summit concluded, PM Modi and PM Albanese expressed their shared commitment to nurturing a forward-looking and dynamic India-Australia partnership. Their discussions underscored the growing ties between the two democracies, with a strong focus on future collaboration that benefits both countries and contributes to global prosperity and security.

The 2nd India-Australia Annual Summit has set a clear direction for future cooperation across a wide range of sectors, with both leaders confident that their countries’ partnership will continue to flourish in the coming years, advancing peace, prosperity, and sustainability for both nations and the broader global community.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.
