First time Councillor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari, was elected as Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong on 19 November

Councillor Pradeep Tiwari has been elected as the Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong, becoming the first councillor of Indian heritage to hold the position. Representing the Bluestone Ward, Mayor Tiwari takes over from outgoing Mayor Councillor Cuc Lam, bringing a wealth of community experience and a vision for inclusivity.

A long-time resident of West Footscray, Mayor Tiwari has been actively involved in the local community for over three decades. As President of the West Footscray Traders Association, he has played a key role in organising events such as the Festival of Colours and Christmas Carols, which have become highlights of the city’s cultural calendar. His dedication to strengthening community ties was formally recognised in 2022 with the Community Strengthening Award at the Maribyrnong Civic Awards.

During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tiwari led a free grocery delivery service for older residents and people living with disabilities, working with local organisations to assist more than 300 residents. This initiative reflected his commitment to supporting those most in need and fostering a sense of unity.

As Mayor, Tiwari is focused on creating a welcoming and thriving community where everyone feels valued. He plans to champion initiatives that celebrate Maribyrnong’s diversity and ensure opportunities are available for all residents to prosper. His extensive background in community service places him in good stead to bring this vision to life.

Joining him in leadership is Councillor Bernadette Thomas, who was re-elected as Deputy Mayor for a second term. Her experience and dedication are expected to complement Tiwari’s goals for the city.

Maribyrnong, known for its vibrant cultural fabric and active community engagement, sees this leadership as a reflection of its evolving identity. Residents are optimistic about the direction Mayor Tiwari and Deputy Mayor Thomas will take, fostering growth, inclusivity, and collaboration across the city.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.
