Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has extended his best wishes to Hindu Australians as they prepare to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, emphasising the cultural richness and unity that Hindu traditions bring to Australia. In a detailed message on behalf of the Coalition, Dutton acknowledged the deep-rooted history of Diwali and its resonance within Australia’s multicultural landscape.
“On behalf of the Coalition, I send my best wishes to Australians of Hindu faith as you celebrate Diwali,” Dutton began, highlighting the significance of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana, in inspiring the festival. He recounted the tale of Prince Rama, whose journey of exile, the rescue of his wife Sita, and return to his kingdom is symbolised in Diwali’s iconic lighting of lamps, or diyas. This ancient story, Dutton noted, serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, courage, and the triumph of light over darkness.
Dutton described the festival as a celebration of hope, adding, “The Festival of Lights—with its lighting of diyas and display of vibrant colours—is symbolic of the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.” He pointed to the retelling of the Ramayana from one generation to the next as a lesson in resilience and optimism, values that he said resonate universally, particularly in challenging times.
Reflecting on Australia’s multicultural achievements, Dutton praised Diwali as “testimony to the achievement of modern Australia: we are a people of many backgrounds, of many faiths, who practise many cultural traditions.” He went on to emphasise that, despite diverse origins and practices, Australians are united by common values: a love for family, appreciation for community, respect for law, and pride in democratic ideals.
Dutton concluded his message by recognising the Hindu community’s contributions to Australian society. “On the occasion of Diwali, I thank the more than 684,000 Australians of Hindu faith for your contributions to your communities and our country in many fields of endeavour,” he stated. With words of appreciation, he wished happiness to all celebrating, encouraging them to enjoy the festival with loved ones in the spirit of peace and togetherness.
Peter Dutton’s message captures the essence of Diwali as both a cultural celebration and a symbol of unity within Australia. His reflections on shared values underscore the ideals that unite Australians of all backgrounds, and his acknowledgement of the Hindu community’s role in shaping the nation adds a personal touch to this year’s Diwali celebrations.
