Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has shared a message of unity and celebration as Australians prepare to observe Diwali, the festival known for its radiant lights, joyous gatherings, and cultural traditions. Extending his wishes, Albanese highlighted the festival’s themes of light triumphing over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, themes he said resonate deeply within Australia’s multicultural fabric.
“This annual festival of joy, hope and togetherness is an extraordinarily beautiful celebration of faith and culture,” he stated, noting Diwali’s significance as a time when family, friends, and communities come together. His message reflects the ideals of unity and respect for cultural diversity that are central to the Australian identity.
Diwali, widely observed by Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist communities worldwide, sees families gather in homes, parks, temples, and community centres. Across Australia, from city centres to suburban parks, these celebrations are marked by vibrant displays, dances, food, and the warm glow of thousands of lamps and lanterns.
Adding her own wishes, Foreign Minister Penny Wong extended a heartfelt message across borders: “Wishing a happy Diwali to all those celebrating in Australia, India and around the world. I hope this light-filled festival brings peace and prosperity to all.” As Leader of the Government in the Senate and a Senator for South Australia, Wong’s message highlights Australia’s close cultural ties with India and the global significance of Diwali as a festival celebrated far and wide.
The Prime Minister’s statement emphasised Diwali’s role in fostering a sense of community, describing it as a “moment to enjoy the company of loved ones, and to reflect on the shared inheritance of centuries of tradition.” For Albanese, the festival not only celebrates faith but also reinforces Australia’s commitment to multicultural harmony. This year’s Diwali follows a series of other cultural celebrations across the country, reflecting a collective enthusiasm to embrace the diversity that has become a defining characteristic of Australia.
Both Albanese and Wong’s words capture the spirit of Diwali, underlining Australia’s commitment to multicultural harmony. As families light lamps across the country, the festival becomes a unifying celebration, bringing hope and fostering peace across communities.
