Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is scheduled to visit RMIT today, marking an important moment for Australia-India relations in education and research. Pradhan, who arrived in Melbourne earlier, was greeted warmly by the Indian community. He expressed his appreciation for the reception, saying:
“Arrived in Australia to a warm welcome. Grateful to the Indian community in Melbourne for the wonderful reception. It was an honour interacting with them. Glad to answer their questions on cooperation between India and Australia in education, particularly on aspects of internationalisation, university linkages, research, skilling, student exchange among others.”
Pradhan will be accompanied by Australia’s Federal Education Minister, Jason Clare, and RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alec Cameron during his visit to the university’s City Campus. The focus of the visit will be to explore RMIT’s best practice research and industry partnerships.
As part of the visit, Pradhan will tour RMIT’s state-of-the-art Discovery to Device advanced manufacturing facility, where cutting-edge collaborations between universities, researchers, and start-ups are creating new technologies for healthcare and diagnostics. The facility’s innovations, such as wireless electronic devices and rapid disease screening tools, have gained significant global interest.
Pradhan’s itinerary also includes a visit to RMIT’s College of Vocational Education, known for its emphasis on practical, skills-based learning that aligns well with India’s focus on skilling and workforce development. This visit underscores the growing ties between Australia and India, with RMIT at the forefront of vocational education and transnational programs.
Highlighting the importance of knowledge collaborations, Pradhan added: “Our diaspora are the biggest ambassadors of Bharat’s civilisation. Our civilisational values and knowledge can offer solutions to global challenges. Knowledge collaborations will be the cornerstone of India-Australia friendship as well as in addressing mutual priorities.”
A key point of discussion during the visit will be RMIT’s flagship partnership with the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, which positions the university as a leader in transnational education in India. This collaboration continues to strengthen educational links between the two nations, helping to shape the future of research and innovation in the Asia Pacific.
Pradhan’s visit comes at a time when education and knowledge exchange are central to Australia-India relations, and RMIT’s role in fostering these collaborations is a key part of this evolving partnership.
