Tasmanian businesses are gearing up for a promising future thanks to a recent trade and investment mission to the United States, a significant milestone that highlights the strength and potential of the island’s economy. The mission, led by Premier and Minister for Trade and Major Investment, Jeremy Rockliff, spanned five days and targeted key regions, including Washington State and Texas, which serve as pivotal markets for Tasmanian exports.

During this mission, the Tasmanian delegation managed to forge groundbreaking agreements, enhancing the prospects for local businesses while also laying the groundwork for future economic growth in the region. Premier Rockliff expressed his optimism about the mission’s outcomes, noting its importance in bolstering Tasmania’s economic development and employment opportunities.

A standout achievement was the contract awarded to Pivot Maritime, a company based in Legana, which secured a significant contract with the US Navy’s Military Sealift Command. This contract, valued at an initial USD$1.75 million, centres around portable simulators and is a testament to Tasmanian innovation spearheaded by Dr. Jeff Hawkins. This contract represents a cornerstone opportunity that could catalyse further growth in Tasmania’s maritime sector.

The signing of a Strategic Cooperation Agreement between Washington State and the Tasmanian Government is another highlight of the trip. This agreement aims to enhance collaboration between the two regions in the maritime and renewable energy sectors. Both Tasmania and Washington State share common strengths, including traditional industries such as forestry, aquaculture, and viticulture. This new agreement focuses on accelerating trade, investment, and skills development, setting the stage for mutual benefits and growth.

During his visit, Premier Rockliff had the unique opportunity to gift Governor Jay Inslee a pair of Blundstone boots, direct from the company’s newly opened flagship store on the West Coast of the USA. This gesture not only showcases Tasmanian craftsmanship but also reflects the growing recognition of local brands in international markets, with Blundstone now adorning the feet of countless Americans.

The mission was not solely about immediate contracts and agreements; it also opened the door for future industry advancements. Premier Rockliff expressed enthusiasm about introducing modern technologies like industrial 3D printing to Tasmania, which could significantly reduce housing construction costs. He met with ICON, a company renowned for overseeing the largest 3D-printed community in the world, discussing how their innovative approach could help achieve Tasmania’s goal of delivering an additional 10,000 social and affordable homes.

The trade mission also saw Tasmanian representatives engage with several notable organisations and partners, including Corvus Energy, which is set to supply Incat with batteries for their fully electric ferry, and the Port of Seattle, where discussions were held on best practices for port governance and management. Furthermore, meetings with the US Coast Guard reinforced Hobart’s position as a strategic port for resupply operations and the potential for a more permanent base for vessels servicing the Antarctic region.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Tasmanian Maritime Network and Washington Maritime Blue, focusing on collaborative initiatives related to offshore wind and maritime workforce development. Discussions also took place regarding a potential student exchange agreement between the Australian Maritime College and the University of Washington, showcasing an interest in building educational ties and fostering knowledge exchange.

Additionally, the Tasmanian delegation explored opportunities for establishing a Maritime Precinct in Bell Bay, engaging with potential partners and investors to support this business case. Networking events, co-hosted with the Australian American Chamber of Commerce – Pacific Northwest division, facilitated valuable connections and expanded the Tasmanian brand in the US market.

The mission successfully unlocked new trade markets for Tasmanian wine and spirits producers, showcasing the unique flavours and qualities of the island’s offerings. This strategic expansion into the US market is a crucial step for local producers looking to diversify their customer base and strengthen their global presence.

Another exciting development was the launch of Tasmania’s own Three Cuts Gin into the Texas and New York markets, further solidifying the region’s reputation for producing high-quality spirits. The annual value of Tasmanian exports to the US market for the year ending July 2024 reached an impressive $388 million, underscoring the significance of this relationship.

As Tasmania continues to navigate the complexities of the global economy, the government remains committed to the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future. This strategic initiative aims to support key market sectors, helping Tasmanian businesses tap into new opportunities, diversify their operations, and enhance resilience against economic challenges.

The outcomes of this trade and investment mission highlight the tenacity and innovation of Tasmanian businesses as they expand their horizons and build lasting partnerships in the US market. The efforts of Premier Rockliff and the Tasmanian delegation serve as a beacon of hope, illustrating that with determination and strategic collaboration, the Tasmanian economy can thrive on the international stage.

This mission not only reflects the success of Tasmanian enterprises but also sets a powerful precedent for future trade initiatives, demonstrating the potential for continued growth and development. The government’s commitment to fostering relationships and exploring new markets will undoubtedly yield positive results, as Tasmania positions itself as a key player in the global economy.

The trade mission has opened doors to new possibilities, inspiring local businesses to innovate and adapt in a rapidly changing world. With a focus on sustainable practices and advanced technologies, Tasmania is well-equipped to meet the demands of the future while staying true to its rich heritage and natural resources.

As Tasmanian businesses embark on this new chapter, the collective efforts of government, industry leaders, and local communities will play a pivotal role in shaping the future landscape of the island’s economy. The positive outcomes of this mission serve as a testament to the resilience and creativity of Tasmanians, proving that they are ready to take on the world, one innovative deal at a time.
