Perth’s south-east is currently experiencing a transport transformation as significant milestones in major infrastructure projects are achieved, marking a pivotal moment for one of the fastest-growing areas in Western Australia. With over $2.7 billion invested in road and rail developments, this initiative aims to slash commute times, enhance road safety, and provide affordable transport options for local residents.
At the heart of this transformation is the METRONET Byford Rail Extension, which is progressing rapidly. Construction of more than 80 per cent of the elevated rail has been completed, showcasing the momentum of the project. Work on the new Byford Station is also advancing, with the station’s platform nearing completion and the roof canopy well underway. Byford, a community projected to swell to around 50,000 residents over the next two decades, will soon connect to the METRONET rail network for the first time. This connection is set to revolutionise travel for residents, allowing them to reach Perth’s central business district in just 42 minutes for a fare of only $4.16 with a SmartRider.
The infrastructure projects are not solely focused on rail. The Cook Government is committed to improving road safety and reducing congestion. This includes the removal of seven level crossings, notably introducing a new road over rail traffic bridge at Thomas Road. The enhancements on Tonkin Highway are also significant, with expressions of interest released for Stage One of the Tonkin Highway Corridor project. This initiative will deliver two new grade-separated interchanges at Welshpool Road and Hale Road, while also widening the highway itself. These upgrades are set to substantially reduce travel times along this key transport route.
The government has also moved forward with Stage Two of the Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade project, which is essential for accommodating the anticipated population growth in the area. Major safety upgrades on Thomas Road have already been completed, ensuring that the transport network can handle increased traffic more effectively.
Premier Roger Cook expressed his understanding of the vital role quality road and rail links play for families living in outer suburbs. He stated that through the METRONET initiative, the government is dedicated to bringing rail to Byford, offering affordable public transport on what is described as a world-class rail system. Cook highlighted that these investments along Tonkin Highway will alleviate congestion on this crucial route, allowing residents to spend less time in cars and more time with their families. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing the necessary infrastructure for the future of the south-eastern suburbs, emphasising that the Labor Government will always prioritise what is best for Western Australia.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti echoed these sentiments, noting that the south-east corridor is one of the city’s fastest-growing areas. The government’s significant investments are aimed at ensuring that these communities have the transport infrastructure needed to support their growth for years to come. Whether it involves connecting residents to the METRONET rail network or enhancing roads to make commuting safer and more efficient, Saffioti underscored the government’s commitment to supporting local communities. Darling Range MLA Hugh Jones highlighted the importance of infrastructure investment in the rapidly expanding Byford community.
