Sikh Volunteers Australia has expanded its capacity to support individuals and families in need with the launch of a new kitchen facility and three new vehicles.
Member for Hastings, Paul Mercurio, attended the opening of the kitchen and the unveiling of the vehicles at the organisation’s Langwarrin premises today.
Sikh Volunteers Australia is a volunteer-run organisation that provides free meals to Victorians in need and supports communities across the state during crises such as bushfires and floods.
In 2023, the organisation distributed more than 28,000 free meals from their vans and provided food, water, and essential supplies during disaster relief efforts.
Recent investments include $500,000 from the government for two new vans and the fit-out of a new food truck to enhance food relief and outreach services during emergencies. Additionally, $250,000 was allocated towards building a new kitchen at the Langwarrin base, complemented by a $700,000 contribution from the Albanese Government.
These upgrades will ensure Sikh Volunteers Australia is better equipped to respond quickly and effectively during times of crisis.
“We continue to support organisations like Sikh Volunteers Australia, who are making a real difference for Victorians in need. We’re proud to have funded these vehicles, enabling the team to reach even more communities with their vital services,” said Ross Spence, Minister for Carers and Volunteers.
Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Ingrid Stitt said, “This new kitchen facility will help Sikh Volunteers Australia continue their incredible work, having already distributed more than 28,000 meals last year.
“Our investment ensures more Victorian families can access the support they need in difficult times.”
Expressing his delight, Member for Hastings, Paul Mercurio said, “I’m pleased we’ve been able to help Sikh Volunteers Australia expand their food relief efforts for local communities. Many Victorians are facing tough times, and investments like this are crucial.”
