The vibrant festivities showcased the strength and diversity of Cairns’ Malayali community, creating an atmosphere of joy and pride for all who attended. Michael Healy MP expressed his gratitude for being part of such a culturally enriching festival, sharing in the celebration and presenting the Tug of War trophy to the winning team

The Malayali Association Cairns Inc. (MAC) hosted a colourful Onam celebration on 7 September at St. Andrew’s Catholic College, Redlynch, bringing together the spirit of Kerala’s rich traditions and the Cairns community. The annual festival honoured the mythical King Mahabali and showcased a blend of culture, unity, and joyous celebration.

The day’s highlight was the Mega Thiruvathira, a captivating traditional group dance performed in stunning Kerala attire. With the rhythmic beats of the Thallam setting the pace, dancers moved with elegance, leaving the audience entranced by the authenticity and grace of the performance.

Tug of War contests for both men and women brought out lively competition and thrilled spectators as teams gave their all. Children weren’t left out either, with a variety of games and activities that kept the youngest members of the community engaged and excited. The entire event was a kaleidoscope of performances, games, and cultural displays that left a lasting impression on all who attended.

Local leaders joined in the festivities, adding to the day’s celebrations. Michael Healy MP was enthusiastic about being part of such a meaningful event, saying: “I had the pleasure of joining the Malayali Association of Cairns in a fantastic family event celebrating their 2024 Onam festival. I even had the opportunity to participate in the Tug of War and present the winning trophy! This festival showcases our community at its best and celebrates the legendary King Mahabali of Kerala. Many thanks for the warm hospitality and the fun tug-of-war!”

Bree James also shared her admiration for the artistry on display: “It was wonderful to be invited to St. Andrew’s Catholic College for the Onam celebration. The Rangoli images made of flowers and dyed rice were absolutely beautiful. I was amazed to learn that each design took three hours to create!”

The success of the Onam festival was a reflection of MAC’s dedication to preserving Kerala’s cultural heritage in Cairns, offering an opportunity for the community to celebrate together while honouring their roots. With its vibrant performances, heartfelt moments, and inclusive atmosphere, the event embodied the spirit of Onam and the shared pride of the Cairns Malayali community.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
