The Tasmanian Government is on the verge of revolutionising public transport with a new state-wide smart ticketing system, finalising an agreement with Cubic Transportation Systems. Minister for Transport, Eric Abetz, outlined how this initiative will enhance travel convenience across Tasmania’s public transport network, allowing payments via bank cards or smart devices.
Passengers will soon enjoy the ability to pay for bus and ferry trips with a simple tap of their bank card, phone, or watch. This eliminates the hassle of forgetting a travel card or needing to pre-load funds. “This world-leading, smart ticketing system will mean more choices to plan and pay your way,” Minister Abetz remarked. The new system aims to streamline the boarding process and enhance the overall experience of using public transport. Additionally, it will build on existing efforts to provide live tracking for all Tasmanians by December.
This announcement follows the successful implementation of a reduced fare scheme that has recorded over 2 million half-price bus trips since its launch in June. “We continue to deliver half-price bus and ferry fares right across our network, helping to reduce the cost of living for Tasmanians,” Abetz noted, celebrating the program’s early success in meeting its target.
The partnership with Cubic leverages technology typically reserved for larger jurisdictions, showcasing the benefits of resource-sharing across states. Over the next year, the Tasmanian Government will collaborate with Cubic to tailor the system for local needs and conduct extensive testing before rolling it out to over 300 buses and Derwent Ferries terminals.
This initiative reflects Tasmania’s commitment to improving public transport accessibility and convenience, promising a smarter future for travel across the state.
