Lunchbox love: Celebrating culture and health with Adam Liaw

Healthy eating is taking centre stage for Multicultural Health Week 2024, with a focus on promoting nutritious lunchboxes that reflect the rich cultural diversity of NSW. The initiative, led by NSW Health Minister Ryan Park, aims to inspire communities to embrace healthy eating habits through the theme ‘Celebrate culture through food with multicultural family lunchboxes.’

This year’s campaign enlists the expertise of renowned chef and multicultural health ambassador, Adam Liaw. With a passion for both food and culture, Liaw is set to create family-friendly lunchbox recipes that showcase the flavours of various cultures while prioritising nutrition. His participation underscores the message that a healthy diet is accessible and enjoyable, no matter one’s background.

Research indicates that only a small percentage of Australians meet the recommended daily intake of vegetables—just four out of 100 adults and six out of 100 children. Given that children consume roughly a third of their daily food intake at school, filling lunchboxes with vegetables is a key strategy to enhance their overall health and well-being.

NSW Health is backing this initiative with a wealth of resources available online. These include practical tips, easy-to-follow recipes, and menu planners designed to make healthy eating both convenient and affordable. The Multicultural Health Week webpage and social media channels are set to be hubs of information, offering tools to support families in making positive dietary changes.

The campaign also introduces the Multicultural Family Lunchbox Challenge, a competition that encourages young people from multicultural backgrounds to showcase their family’s healthy lunchbox creations. This initiative, launched in collaboration with the Western Sydney Local Health District’s Prevention Education and Research Unit, highlights how cultural foods can be integrated into healthy eating practices.

NSW Health Secretary Susan Pearce emphasised the inclusivity of the campaign, encouraging participation across schools, workplaces, and community settings. Her message resonates with the broader goal of ensuring that everyone, particularly those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, has access to nutritious, budget-friendly meals.

Chef Adam Liaw expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, reflecting on his own experiences as part of a migrant family. He highlighted the potential of cultural foods to serve as inspiration for healthy eating, reinforcing the idea that diet can be both culturally significant and health-conscious.

Multicultural Health Week 2024 not only promotes healthy eating but also celebrates the rich tapestry of cultures that make up NSW. Through shared stories and food, the campaign aims to strengthen community bonds while fostering lifelong healthy habits.
