Victoria is set to shine on the global stage in 2027, with the 150th Anniversary Men’s Ashes Test between Australia and England now confirmed at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
This exciting development is the result of a new partnership between the Allan Labor Government and Cricket Australia.
Premier Jacinta Allan, alongside Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos, joined Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley at the MCG to reinforce Victoria’s status as Australia’s premier destination for sports and major events.
As part of this long-term partnership, the much-loved Boxing Day Test will continue to be held at the MCG until at least 2030. This annual fixture, a highlight of Victoria’s major events calendar, draws cricket enthusiasts from across the globe and broadcasts Melbourne’s vibrant energy to millions worldwide.
The partnership also aims to enhance the match-day experience by incorporating live music, food and drink options, interactive sports activities, fan engagements, and community events, ensuring the excitement extends beyond the stadium and into the wider community.
In March 2027, the MCG will be the stage for the historic 150th Anniversary Men’s Ashes Test between Australia and England, following in the footsteps of the Centenary Ashes Test held at the ‘G in 1977. That memorable match saw Australia triumph by 45 runs, mirroring the result from 100 years earlier.
Hosting exclusive major events like these significantly contributes to Victoria’s visitor economy, which has reached a record $39.3 billion.
This summer, the MCG will also welcome the Australian Women’s cricket team as they face England in the Women’s Ashes Day-Night Test early next year.
The Labor Government remains committed to supporting the next generation of cricketers, having invested over $335 million in community sporting infrastructure to increase participation and make cricket more accessible to all.
Premier Allan said, “We’re proud to welcome fans from around the world to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Ashes at the MCG. The Boxing Day Test belongs in Victoria, and that’s where it will stay.”
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos said, “Victoria is Australia’s major events capital – and now there’s even more reason to travel from around Australia and across the globe with events like these.”
Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley added, “We are enormously grateful to the Victorian Government and delighted that the MCG will host a fantastic array of matches and events over the next seven years – including the NRMA Insurance Boxing Day Test, the CommBank Women’s Ashes Day-Night Test in January 2025, and the 150th Anniversary Test in March 2027.”
