Writers across Tasmania, get your pens ready! The Tasmanian Literary Awards 2025 are officially open for entries, setting the stage for a vibrant showcase of local literary talent. This highly anticipated event, championed by the Tasmanian Government, celebrates the state’s rich literary culture and offers a spotlight to emerging and established writers alike.
Minister for the Arts, Madeleine Ogilvie, has underscored the importance of these awards in bolstering Tasmania’s cultural and creative industries. “The Tasmanian Government is deeply committed to nurturing our vibrant literary scene,” she remarked. “An integral component of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is to foster thriving communities and expand opportunities within the creative sector.”
The Tasmanian Literary Awards are designed to elevate the profile of Tasmanian authors while supporting new literary voices. With a prize pool totalling $125,000, the awards recognise excellence across a broad spectrum of genres and styles, from fiction and non-fiction to poetry and children’s literature.
For 2025, the awards include seven distinct categories. The Premier’s Prize for Fiction, valued at $25,000, is aimed at recognising the best work of fiction, including short stories, by Tasmanian writers. Another $25,000 is up for grabs in the Premier’s Prize for Non-fiction, celebrating outstanding contributions to non-fiction writing.
In a move to encourage and highlight diverse voices, the Minister for the Arts’ Prize for Books for Young Readers and Children, also worth $25,000, will honour works crafted for young readers and young adults across any genre. The Tim Thorne Prize for Poetry, another $25,000 award, is dedicated to recognising a published book of poetry by a Tasmanian writer.
Supporting emerging talent is a key focus, with the University of Tasmania Prize offering $10,000 for the best new unpublished literary work by a Tasmanian writer. Additionally, the Aboriginal Writer’s Fellowship, valued at $10,000, is set aside for First Nations writers, celebrating and supporting their unique contributions to literature. The Margaret Scott Tasmanian Young Writer’s Fellowship, worth $5,000, will recognise a promising young writer aged 30 years and under.
This year’s awards also introduce People’s Choice Awards, allowing the public to engage with and vote for their favourite entries, adding an extra layer of excitement and community involvement.
The entry deadline for the 2025 Tasmanian Literary Awards is Monday, 30 September 2024, with winners to be announced in March 2025. Writers interested in participating can find full details and entry guidelines on the Tasmanian Government’s arts website.
As Tasmania prepares to celebrate its literary talent, this is a prime opportunity for writers to gain recognition and contribute to the island’s thriving literary landscape.
