The Pilbara region of Western Australia is gearing up for a transformative leap in its industrial capabilities, as two significant rail projects move forward, courtesy of the Cook Government’s targeted investments. At the heart of this progress lies the nearly $8 million funding allocation from the Local Manufacturing Investment Fund (LMIF), an initiative designed to foster local manufacturing opportunities, support job creation, and contribute to the ongoing diversification of Western Australia’s economy.
Minister Stephen Dawson, who assists the Minister for State and Industry Development, has highlighted the importance of these investments, which are set to establish an iron ore railcar manufacturing production line and a new centre of excellence in Karratha. The LMIF is not just a financial commitment; it is a strategic move to solidify Western Australia’s standing in the global market by creating a robust local industry capable of producing, testing, and innovating in the field of iron ore railcars.
The CORE Innovation Hub’s new Rail Collaboration Centre (RCC) in Karratha was officially opened today by Minister Dawson. This centre is poised to become a pivotal platform for world-class testing, research, and development in support of iron ore railcar manufacturing. CORE Innovation Hub received nearly $1 million under the LMIF to bring this ambitious project to life. The RCC will not only serve as a hub for innovation but will also create new employment training opportunities and advance the state’s efforts in decarbonisation.
The centre has been developed with strong backing from industry giant Rio Tinto, which recognises the strategic importance of this innovative and collaborative platform. The RCC is expected to bridge critical gaps in the industry, offering a space where new rolling stock, infrastructure, technology, and ideas can be rigorously assessed and refined.
Meanwhile, Gemco Rail is set to make its mark on the region with a nearly $7 million grant from the LMIF to establish an iron ore railcar manufacturing facility in Karratha. This facility will manufacture 100 wagons for Rio Tinto and will also handle the repair and refurbishment of essential wagon components. This dual capacity—both creating new railcar wagons and refurbishing existing ones—positions the facility as a cornerstone of the Pilbara’s rail infrastructure.
The Karratha facility will empower Gemco Rail to undertake the manufacture of iron ore railcar wagons and refurbish rail bearings, a critical component for Pilbara-based miners. By localising these processes, the project will not only reduce dependency on external suppliers but also enhance the region’s ability to maintain a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market.
Since its inception in 2021, the LMIF has proven to be a vital source of support for Western Australian companies, awarding more than $13.5 million to various local businesses. This latest round of funding underscores the Cook Government’s commitment to bolstering the state’s manufacturing sector and driving economic growth through strategic investments.
Minister Dawson articulated the significance of the new Rail Collaboration Centre, describing it as a major step toward establishing a world-class industry in the Pilbara, focused on the manufacture of iron ore railcars. He emphasised that the resources sector’s heavy reliance on railcars makes it both logical and necessary to invest in a local industry that can manufacture, test, and conduct research to deliver state-of-the-art railcar solutions.
Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel echoed this sentiment, expressing his enthusiasm for the advancements being made in the region’s rail infrastructure. He noted that the nearly $1 million support from the LMIF for CORE Innovation Hub’s RCC would drive cutting-edge research and local manufacturing, fostering economic growth and job creation in the process. Additionally, Michel highlighted the impact of Gemco Rail’s upcoming facility in Karratha, which will not only produce and refurbish railcars but also play a key role in bolstering the local economy.
These projects are a clear reflection of the Cook Government’s Diversify WA program, which is focused on strengthening the state’s manufacturing sector and ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for the Pilbara region. By investing in local businesses and fostering a culture of innovation, the government is laying the groundwork for long-term economic stability and job security in Western Australia.
As these projects gain momentum, the Pilbara is set to emerge as a leader in railcar manufacturing, supported by a government that is committed to driving advanced manufacturing and creating opportunities for local businesses. With the opening of the RCC and the upcoming launch of Gemco Rail’s facility, the future of rail infrastructure in the Pilbara looks brighter than ever, promising significant benefits for the local community and the broader Western Australian economy.
