A Celebration of India’s Independence Day

The 26th of August 2023 will forever be etched in the memories of the Gold Coast as the Indian Community in Gold Coast (ICGC) orchestrated a spectacular celebration, fusing the rich tapestry of India’s Independence Day with the vibrant charm of a kite festival. Under the radiant Australian sun, the Gold Coast Kite Festival and Multicultural Dance Competition unfolded, creating an indelible mark on the hearts of all who attended.

In commemoration of India’s 77th Independence Day, the day kicked off with a multi-cultural dance festival, setting the stage for an extraordinary cultural exchange. Against the backdrop of a clear blue sky, hundreds of colourful kites took flight, skilfully maneuverer by enthusiastic kite-enthusiasts from various corners of the globe. The sky was a kaleidoscope of hues, symbolising unity, diversity, and the spirit of togetherness.

The day began on a poignant note as the ICGC Team, joined by notable dignitaries including Angie Bell (Federal Member for Moncrieff) and Rob Molhoek (State Member for Southport), raised the Indian national flag while the national anthem reverberated through the parklands. This moving gesture of patriotism served as a reminder of the shared values that bind communities together.

As kites of all shapes and sizes soared high above, there was a palpable pulse of unity in the air. Participants from diverse backgrounds, hailing from different corners of the world, joined hands in celebrating harmony and cultural diversity. The parklands were not only alive with the vibrant colours of kites but also with the tantalising aromas wafting from food stalls. Delectable Indian dishes, ice creams, and refreshing juices delighted the taste buds of all attendees.

The festivities continued with live music performances that stirred the soul and mesmerising dance acts that enthralled the audience. It was a sensory delight, and the joy in the hearts of those present was infectious.

Adding to the excitement of the day was a significant announcement—the launch of the ICGC Membership Discount Card. This innovative card offers exclusive discounts on business transactions in and around the Gold Coast, spanning a wide range of merchandise and services. The response to this announcement was overwhelming, with the first 80 membership cards being claimed in a mere three hours after the launch.

For those who want to relive the magic or missed out on this incredible celebration, detailed information about the event can be found on the official ICGC website https://www.incgc.org.au.

The ICGC Team extended their heartfelt gratitude to the community for their enthusiastic response and participation, making this event an unparalleled success. As the day drew to a close, they promised to return with even more exciting events in the future, keeping the spirit of unity, diversity, and joy alive in the Gold Coast.

In this harmonious blend of cultural celebrations and a sky adorned with kites, the memories of the Gold Coast Kite Festival and India’s Independence Day will forever remain a cherished chapter in the hearts of the Indian community and their friends in Australia. Until the next event, the Gold Coast can look forward to more moments of unity and cultural exchange, courtesy of the ICGC Team.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.
