Following the success of recent collaborations with leading Melbourne chefs, family-owned, boutique winery Avani Wines today announced a new partnership series with Mischa Tropp (We Are Kerala) who will take over the kitchen from November 19, bringing his own take on Indian cuisine to the Mornington Peninsula.

Located in Red Hill and surrounded by acres of greenery and beautiful rolling hill, Avani Wines is the perfect backdrop for that long-awaited catch up with friends and family. Start with a cellar door wine tasting overlooking the biodynamically farmed vineyard, before moving into the restaurant and letting your tastebuds savour the generous share-style menu which embraces all of Indian cuisine and its diversity.

In the kitchen, Mischa will be firing up the grill and serving up a four-course set menu at $85 per person with dishes that reflect a variety of Indian regions – travel through the streets of Delhi to Bengal, Kerala and Goa, whilst admiring the billowing views on offer. Guests can expect dishes like Besan Chilla, a style of chickpea pancake made with creme fraiche and Yarra Valley trout roe; Wood-fired Prawns topped with a fragrant malaikari curry; and Ada, a savoury, Keralan-style fried wheat pastry generously filled with braised turmeric rabbit. For dessert, save some room for Mishti Doi, a sweet delicacy originating from Bengal, which combines fermented yoghurt with the refreshing flavours of ripe mango and finger lime.

Mischa, whose mother is Keralan, has forged his own path in Melbourne over the years by showcasing just how boundless Indian cuisine can be. Having spent much of 2019 travelling through India, Mischa’s seasonal menu has been inspired by his more recent exploration of regional cuisine and the rich food traditions ingrained in Indian culture.

Through a minimal intervention approach to winemaking, Avani Wines has made a name for themselves producing premium cool-climate wines that are known for their spicy, floral and bright tones—the perfect accompaniment to Indian cuisine.

The heart and soul of this family-owned winery experience comes from winemaker Shashi Singh and husband Devendra’s love of farming and their connection to the land. With Haryanvi heritage, a region well known for its agricultural roots, this passion has been instilled in son Rohit and daughter Retu, both of whom are involved in both the winemaking and cellar door experience today.

Of the newest series, Rohit Singh said, “We’re thrilled to be bringing this partnership to life through our shared heritage, but also because Indian cuisine can be so beautifully balanced and well-paired with good wine.”

He continued, “We hope this gives people the opportunity to experience the charm of Red Hill, in a relaxed setting, and they leave feeling enriched by the shared storytelling that great food and wine can bring.”

The Mischa Tropp series at Avani Wines will take place from 12 November to 30 December and is now taking bookings.
